Karl Fogel. Article 6 “You are what you write”

libre software, mswl, mswl-intro, mswl-manage

Hi all!!

Continuing with the series of articles based in Karl Fogel’s book “Producing Open Source Software“, now I’m going to talk about a sentence commented some days ago by my teachers in class and by Karl Fogel in his book

You are what you write

This statement has very importance in Internet because the only identity that you can provide to Internet world, or the only way to give in Internet who you are is by how you write and how other people write about you.

As Karl Fogel says, you can be a good person, with very knowledge about a determined thing, very friendly, etc. but if write bad, in a non-sense way, even sometimes rude, the appearance that you give to Internet won’t have nothing to see with you really you.

In the opposite case, if you are a rude person, always angry, even with a little kowledge ragarding the topic discussed, but you write very friendly, polite, and with the appropriate words, you’ll give the appearance that you are a good and friendly person.

Of course, these are the extreme cases, usually a good person will write as a good person, and bad person will write as a bad person, but in determined cases there are true.

Other different case based in the same statement, is you must have very careful with that you write, in Internet every word that we write will be very nearly to be forever, when I write this words and finalize this article, I’m going to advertise by twitter maybe someone like this an retwitt this, or take my post and write about them in his/her blog, or maybe this article could be put in reddit, or slashdot, etc. then I won’t can control this propagation and my words surely will be in Internet forever, ok, maybe I’m being alarmist, but think about this😉

In conclussion, be carefull with that you write in Internet, be polite, serious, funny, be you, respect others, and don’t write anything that tomorrow you want forget and be sorry.

See you my friends!!
